Drop D tuning is a great place to start with alternate tunings. It's easy to produce because it only requires one string to be changed from the standard tuning.
Drop D is also one of the most popular alternate tunings. It adds an extra richness to the guitar when the 6th string is added to certain chords.
Drop D tuning example:
Steps to Tune Your Guitar to Drop D:
- Lower the 6th string a whole step to D
Place your finger on the 6th string 7th fret and make it the same pitch as the open 5th string which is an A.
Now play a D chord and make sure you strum all 6 strings. Having the 6th string a D gives the D chord a rich full sound.
