Open G tuning is a versitle tuning that has spaned many different music generes like blues, country, new age and rock and roll. Robert Johnson used this tuning extensively through out his short carrer. Jimmy Page created the song "Bron-Y-Aur Stomp amoung other with the Open G tuning. Open G tunning is also a common banjo tuning. Kieth Richards of the Rolling Stones calls Open G a banjo tuning.

Tune Your Guitar to Open D from Standard tuning.
- Lower the 6th string a whole step to D
Place your finger on the 6th string 7th fret and make it the same pitch as the open 5th string which is an A.
- Lower the 1st string a whole step to D
Place your finger on the 2nd string 3rd fret and make the 1st string the same pitch.
- Lower the 5th string a whole step to G
Place your finger on the 7th fret 5th string and make it the same pitch as the 4th string.
